Sasha Kurmaz (1986, Ukraine) lives and works in Kiev. He holds a Bachelor in design from the Ukrainian State Academy of Art in Kiev. Kurmaz works with photography, public interaction, video, painting, and produces photo zines. Nevertheless, he still describes his works as “photographic†even in case he does not use photography as a medium.
Sasha Kurmaz’s series – Tools of Resistance – will be exhibited at the Biel/Bienne Festival of photography from August 28 until September 20, 2015.
During the Ukrainian Revolution of February 2014 in Kiev, the activists used several items in the confrontation with the police after the first victims of the Independence square (Maidan Nezalezhnosti) and when the police started to use weapons. All of these “home-made weapons†created by the activists are original and were taken from the scene immediately after the clashes.I pursued the goal to create not just a picture, but an anthropological document that would provide me with more information for the analysis of past events. In these studies, I wanted to show the objects very clean, on the border between conceptual art and documentary reportage, focusing all the attention on the form and structure of the object.
