The genome of Neandertal man, extinct for 39,000 years, was mapped in 2013; since then, scientists have envisaged reproducing it artificially in a human stem cell. The (re)birth of a Neandertal is thus a scientific possibility that has to be taken seriously. Ulrike Schmitz follows the trail in “The Missing Link” treating it as the point of departure for a visual reflection on how our place in evolutionary history is changing. “Normal man is an evolutionary dead end; mechanical man, apparently a break in organic evolution, is actually more in the true tradition of a further evolution.” (J.D. Bernal, 1929).
